PIAS Recordings

[ PIAS ] Recordings is a Belgian record company that operates internationally. [ PIAS ] Germany has its headquarters in Hamburg.

History

The name PIAS stands for " Play it Again Sam ", a quote from the movie Casablanca. The label was founded in 1983 in Brussels by Kenny Gates and Michel Lambot.

Play It Again Sam was in the early eighties, part of a wave of influential labels like Factory, Mute, Rough Trade and 4AD. Play It Again Sam was initially one of the driving forces behind the emergence of the electronic body music and industrial music with artists like Front 242, Meat Beat Manifesto and Young Gods known. Later, the label expand his musical horizons with bands such as The Sound, Soulwax, Sigur Rós and Mogwai.

In 2000 the label moved its headquarters from Brussels to London, and was renamed the [ PIAS ] Recordings. [ PIAS ] Recordings participated in the UK on labels like Fat Cat ( was sister label) and released the first two albums by the Icelandic band Sigur Rós, which was the best-selling band in the label's history. The Scottish band Mogwai signed [ PIAS ] Recordings UK in 2001, and 4 albums released on the label.

Apart from the two London-based label, [ PIAS ] Recordings local Artists and Repertoire offices in France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain and the United States. The largest, national artists such as Miossec and The Chase in France, Gisbert zu Knyphausen in Germany, Gabriel Rios and Daan in Belgium, raccoon and Anneke van Giersbergen in the Netherlands and Ojos de Brujo from Spain.

With the unrest in the United Kingdom 2011, the PIAS warehouse burnt down completely.

In February 2013 Universal Music sold the label COOP at PIAS.

Since the 30th anniversary of PIAS there are so called PIAS Nites in the operating countries. On December 13, 2012 Knyphausen in Berlin with I am Kloot, Gisbert, Lisa Hannigan, Andy Burrows, Ghostpoet, Nicolas storm.
