Piatra Neamt [ pjatra Neamt ͜ s] (literally " German stone " German Cross Castle on the Bistritz, Hungarian Karácsonkő ) is the capital of the district Neamţ in Romania.
Geographical location
Piatra Neamt is located in the historic region of western Moldova, on the terraces of the left bank of Bistrita ( Bistrita ) surrounded by foothills of the Eastern Carpathians, the mountains Pietricica, Cozla, Cernegura and Bâtca Doamnei to the national roads (drum National) DN 15, 15C and 15D.
History
The city was founded in the late 14th century as Piatra lui Crăciun. It developed after the establishment of a princely court by Ştefan cel Mare, Prince of Moldavia (1433-1504), a famous art commercial and economic center. The obvious place Târgu Neamţ was a German settler colony, hence the name ( Neamţ = German ) medieval center.
Population
According to the data of the European statistics agency Eurostat from 2001, the average annual population growth rate was -2.0 %. 17.1 % of people were unemployed. 15.6% of the population were under 15 years, 2.8% were over 75 years old.
