Pontifical Commission for Latin America
The Pontifical Commission for Latin America (Latin: Pontificia Commissio per America Latina ), a department of the Roman Curia.
The Commission has on 19 April in 1958 by Pope Pius XII. established to support the work of the Church in Latin America. Paul VI. expanded the Commission by a General Council for Latin America, who coordinated the various activities of the Latin American countries. In 1988, a major revamp by John Paul II was fixed in the Apostolic Constitution Pastor Bonus of 28 June 1988. Accordingly, the task of the Commission for Latin America is provided for in Article 83 Pastor Bonus:
- Help by Council and economic means for the individual churches in Latin America,
- Support of the Departments of the Roman and the national churches,
- Support of religious institutions at national and international level.
Organization
The Commission is headed by the respective Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops. Together with a Vice-President shall be appointed bishops of the Roman Curia and of Latin America and in the Third Commission for Latin America.
President Marc Cardinal Ouellet since 2010 PSS. The Office of the Vice President has been vacant since May 2011. Guzmán Carriquiry was appointed 14 May 2011 as Secretary.
