Quirinal Palace

The Quirinale (Italian: Palazzo del Quirinale Quirinale or short ) is a palace from 1583 erected on the Quirinal in Rome. It is official residence of the President of the Republic of Italy.

History

Situated on the Piazza del Quirinale building was first used by Pope Gregory XIII. based as a summer residence. Furthermore, it served temporarily as Ausrichtungsort for papal conclaves as well as an administrative building of the former Papal States. In 1871 Rome became the capital of the Kingdom of Italy and expropriated the palace. An allowance was made only in the context of the 1929 Lateran Treaty closed. The building remained until 1946 the seat of the Kings of Italy. After the abolition of the monarchy, it took over the republic as the official residence of the President.

Affairs

The main building encloses a large rectangular courtyard, guests of state can be received out of the public with military honors at the. The facade is by Domenico Fontana. In the stairwell is the most famous fresco of the palace, the blessing of Christ Melozzo da Forlì. From the main building extends in a northeasterly direction along the Via del Quirinale the so-called " long sleeves " ( manica lunga ), one planned by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and repeatedly matured in the course of time building tract. Here you will find, among other things, the " Imperial Apartments " ( appartamenti imperiali ), where in 1888 and 1893 the German Kaiser Wilhelm II was staying on his state visits to Rome. These apartments are state guests even today. Before the Quirinale Palace is located on the Piazza del Quirinale the Dioskurenbrunnen with the Quirinale Obelisk.
