Rancenay

Rancenay is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Rancenay is located on 252 m, about 8 km southwest of the city of Besançon ( straight line ). The village is located on the western edge of the Jura, on a saddle of the Jura chain border, north of the Doubstals.

The area of ​​3.66 km ² municipal area comprises a portion of Doubstals. The central part of the area occupied by the approximately 500 to 700 m wide, flat Talniederung of the Doubs. In the Talniederung is located next to the river and the Rhine - Rhone canal, which has a lock at Rancenay. The south of the Doubstals located escarpment also belongs to the municipality. History

The first mention of Rancenay was already in the 10th century. In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the first rule Mont Ferrand, then the Gauthiot family before it came to the Jesuit College of Besançon in 1629. Together with the Franche -Comté Rancenay came with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France.

Attractions

East open field, the village is the church of Notre- Dame des Champs, originally dates from the 14th century and was extensively restored between 1833 and 1834. The bell tower is dated to the year 1725.

Population

With 298 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Rancenay one of the small communities of the department of Doubs.
