Raúl González (athlete)

Raúl González ( Raúl González Rodríguez; * February 29, 1952 in China, Nuevo León ) is a former Mexican walkers and Olympic champion.

After he had occupied 20th place at the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972 with 20 years in the 50 km walk, he was able to establish itself in the coming years as a world class skiers. Im 20 km Walk he achieved at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal 5th and 6th place in 1980 in Moscow in 1977, 1981 and 1983, he won the World Cup, the so-called Lugano Trophy.

In the 50,000 m Track Walk he improved 1978 ( 3:52:23,5 h) and 1979 ( 3:41:38,4 h) the world record. In the 50 km walk on the street González improved the record in 1978 twice. The second record of 3:41:20 h was also his personal best. At the World Athletics Championships 1983 in Helsinki he finished fifth.

At the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, the strong walkers from the Soviet Union and the GDR were missing because of the Olympic boycott, and Raúl González won gold over 50 km. On the 20 km distance, he won silver behind his compatriot Ernesto Canto.

Raúl González is the most successful at the Olympics Athlete of Mexico.
