Rausu, Hokkaido

Rausu (Japanese罗 臼 町, -chō ) is a town in Japan. It is located in the district of Menashi in the sub-prefecture in the Japanese prefecture Hokkaido Nemuro.

Geography

Rausu is located on the southern half of the Shiretoko Peninsula. Kunashir, one of the four disputed between Japan and Russia Kuril Islands, can be seen from the city.

History

In 1901, the village Uembetsu solves (植 别 村, -mura ) from the community Shibetsu. 1923 following the appointment as second-class municipality. 1930 Uembetsu is renamed Rausu. Followed in 1961 by the appointment of chō.

The word comes from the Rausu Ainu language from the word ra -us- i (ラウㇱイ) which is probably " ( lower) place with guts " means and either it refers here that salmon and trout spawning or that was shot here Wild.
