Rewa (Hindi: रीवा, Riva [ ri ː ʋɑ ː ]; Rewah also ) is a town in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh with around 235,000 inhabitants ( 2011 census ). It is located in the region Baghelkhand Madhya Pradesh to the northeast. The city was founded in 1400 by Baghel Rajputs (warrior caste). The city is the administrative center of the district of Rewa and was from 1597 the capital of the princely state of Rewa, from 1871 to 1931 the capital of the Baghelkhand Agency and from 1948 to 1956 of Vindhya Pradesh. Rewa is located approximately 130 kilometers south of Allahabad. The name comes from the river Narmada, also called Rewa.

Rewa is surrounded by forest, which is known for its tiger population, the tiger sanctuary of Bandhavgarh is located here. Together with Kanha to the Bandhavgarh forest Kisli have served as the setting for Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book. Most of today's captive white tigers are descendants of a white tiger cub that was captured here in 1950.

Economy

Rewa is connected by road with other towns and is a trading center for masonry units, grain and wood. The weaving of clothing and woodcarving are important industries of the city.

In addition, there are in the region much limestone and coal, making it a center of the cement industry. In the vicinity there are, among other cement factories of JAYPEE in Bela, Naubasta and Bhagwar. The JAYPEE Group in Rewa also has its own housing development for employees known as " Jaypee Nagar ".

Asia's biggest cement factory, operated by Prism Cement, is located near Rewas in Sajjanpur

Many companies of the Birla group as Vindhya Tele Links and Birla Ericson located in Rewa.

Traffic

Train: Rewa is connected by the 50 km long stretch of the city of Satna. Satna is again on the Mumbai- Howrah route, which also makes stop in Allahabad.

Street: Rewa is located on India's longest highway of NH 7 from Varanasi to Kanyakumari via Mirzapur, Katni, Jabalpur, Nagpur, Hyderabad, Bangalore. The NH 27 to Allahabad and the NH 75 from Ranchi to Gwalior run through the city.

Aviation: The closest airports are in Khajuraho and Allahabad.
