Richard Howard Ichord, Jr.

Richard Howard Ichord (* June 27, 1926 in Licking, Texas County, Missouri, † December 25, 1992 in Nevada, Missouri ) was an American politician. Between 1961 and 1981 he represented the State of Missouri in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

After primary school, Richard Ichord served during the Second World War from 1944 to 1946 in the U.S. Navy. Then he studied until 1952 at the University of Missouri, among other law; then he worked as a lawyer. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party. Between 1952 and 1960 he was a deputy in the House of Representatives from Missouri, he served as its chairman in 1957 and 1959.

In the congressional elections of 1960 Ichord was in the eighth electoral district of Missouri in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of ASJ Carnahan on 3 January 1961. After nine elections he could pass in Congress until January 3, 1981 ten legislative periods. In this time were, among others, the Vietnam War, the Watergate scandal and the culmination of the civil rights movement. From 1969 to 1975 he was chairman of the Committee on Un-American Activities, who renamed himself during his tenure in Committee on Internal Security.

1980 renounced Ichord on a bid again. In the following years he worked as a lawyer again. He died on December 25, 1992 in Nevada, a small town in Vernon County.
