Richard Matheson

Richard Burton Matheson ( born February 20, 1926 in Allendale, New Jersey, † June 23, 2013 in Calabasas, California ) was an American science fiction and screenwriter. He also published under the pseudonym Logan Swanson.

Life

Born in New Jersey in 1926 Matheson grew up in Brooklyn, New York City, on.

Matheson studied at the University of Missouri journalism. His first publication in 1950 put him in the light of the science-fiction story. With Born of Man and Woman He landed a classic in the Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction. His unique style of combining science fiction and horror found in numerous story collections reflected.

Since 1951 he lives in California. In 1952 he married Ruth Ann Woodson. The marriage produced four children, including also a writer working sons Chris, Richard Christian Matheson Marie and Ali.

His first novel I Am Legend (1954 ) was filmed several times. In the first film adaptation in 1963 under the title The Last Man on Earth Vincent Price played the lead role. 1971, it was under the title of The Omega Man ​​with Charlton Heston and again in 2007 as I Am Legend, starring Will Smith filmed. For the film adaptation of his second novel The Shrinking Man (1956 ) under the title The Incredible Mister C. (1957 ), he also wrote the screenplay. This film also established his career in Hollywood and is considered a classic of fantastic film.

He put in a row - with its growing success in the film industry - his literary work in the science fiction scene more and more into the background. He wrote screenplays, for which he received numerous awards.

Matheson is not an integral part of the science fiction of the fifties. While poking out towards the horror genre, he decided to take advantage of the upcoming sci-fi boom and was able to join the emerging trends and also this commercial use for yourself.

His persistent connection to the fantastic genre he proved by numerous script works, especially with his Edgar Allan Poe adaptations for Roger Corman.

His novel The end is just the beginning, behind the horizon. Matheson is the result of extensive research into the afterlife of different religions and cultures. Among other things, he refers here to the Theosophists Emanuel Swedenborg. The novel was made ​​into a film in 1998 starring Robin Williams. The film Beyond the horizon provides expressive images, but has little of the depth of the novel.

For his novel Bid Time Return ( 1975) has received the World Fantasy Award. Matheson's novel I Am Legend 2012 was awarded the Bram Stoker Award with the special prize Vampire Novel of the Century Award.

Matheson died 87 years old in June 2013 at his home in Calabasas, California.
