Geography

Geographical Location

Rieste is a nationally recognized resort in the north of Osnabrück country. The hare runs through the municipality in north-south direction and is divided into High and depth hare. In the West, about 5 % belong to the area of the Alfsee Rieste.

Neighboring communities

Rieste bordered to the north and Gehrde Bersenbrueck, on the west by Alfhausen, to the south Bramsche ( districts Epe and Sögeln ) and to the east by New -Vörden (Landkreis Vechta).

On 1 July 1972, a large part of the dissolved municipality Bieste was incorporated.

The council currently has 15 members from four parties or groups. On 14 November 2011 Sebastian Hüdepohl was with 13 votes, was elected as the new mayor and successor of Anton Harms, who held the office since 1996 and sworn. Coat of arms

The coat of arms of the municipality Rieste shows the so-called camp gate in Siber on a red shield. The eight-pointed cross references the Hospitaller or Knights of Malta. Through this gate one enters the pilgrimage location from the west. The camp gate is the relic of a once great gatehouse from 1697., This was canceled in 1864 for unknown reasons. From 1245 to 1810 maintained the Hospitaller or Knights of Malta with the Coming position as a major subsidiary. The present building complex of the Coming emerged after the Thirty Years War.

After years of private use purchased the Roman Catholic Diocese of Osnabrück, in the territory of the municipality lies Rieste, in 1999, the Coming and handed them to the nuns of the Dominican Monastery "Mater Dolorosa " from Klausen / Mosel. Next to the monastery is today's Catholic parish and pilgrimage church of St. John the Baptist from the year 1426. The tower was built in the years 1902-1904. Tourism on Alfsee is an important economic factor for the community and region.
