Robert Lachmann

Robert Lachmann ( born November 28, 1892 in Berlin, † May 8, 1939 in Jerusalem ) was a German musicologist, librarian and orientalist. He is a co-founder of the Berlin School for Comparative Musicology.

In World War I he was an interpreter in a POW camp with soldiers from Africa. 1927 to 1933 he worked in the music department of the Prussian State Library and undertook research at this time traveling in the Near East. He was a pupil of John Wolf ( musicologist ).

After the seizure of power by the National Socialists Jewish origins, Lachmann lost his position at the Prussian State Library, and finally emigrated in April to Palestine in 1935. At the invitation of Judah Leon Magnes, he took up a position at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he founded the Centre and Archive for Oriental music to life, especially devoted themselves to the Jewish music.
