Roman Catholic Diocese of El Obeid
The Roman Catholic Diocese of al - Ubayyid (Latin: Dioecesis Elobeidensis, Arabic الأبيض al - Ubayyid; alternative spelling El Obeid, El- Obeid rare or El Obied ) comprises the Sudanese states Schamal Kordofan, Dschanub Kordofan, Gharb Kordofan, Darfur Schamal, Dschanub Darfur and West Darfur. The name derives from the state capital of Kordofan Schamal al - Ubayyid.
History
On 10 May 1960, the Apostolic Vicariate of al - Ubayyid was founded out of territory of the Apostolic Vicariate of Khartoum. On December 12, 1974, the Apostolic Vicariate was elevated to a diocese and the Archdiocese of Khartoum is a suffragan.
