Roman Catholic Diocese of Łomża

The Diocese of Łomża (Latin: Dioecesis Lomzensis, poln: Diecezja Łomżyńska ) is a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church in Poland with a bishopric in Łomża.

Geographical Location

The Diocese of Łomża is bordered to the north by the diocese of Warmia and the Diocese of Elk, on the east by the Archdiocese of Białystok, in the south of the Diocese of Warsaw - Praga and to the diocese Drohiczyn and to the west by the Diocese of Płock. On March 25, 1992, the diocese was assumed together with the Diocese of Drohiczyn by Pope John Paul II with the Apostolic Constitution Totus Tuus Poloniae populus the Metropolitan Diocese of Białystok as suffragan.

History

As a diocese Wigry on 25 March 1798 by Pope Pius VI. built, it was renamed with the papal decree of 30 June 1818 in Sejny / Augustów.

On October 28, 1925 of the closed on March 18, 1921 State Treaty with the Soviet Union ( Treaty of Riga) Sejny was due to be dissolved and re-created the Diocese of Łomża.

In January 2009 Sejny was reactivated as a titular whose first titular archbishop was on 18 March 2009 January Romeo Pawlowski, Apostolic Nuncio of the Republic of Congo and Gabon.
