Rosalía Arteaga

Rosalía Arteaga Serrano de Fernández de Córdova ( born December 5, 1956 in Cuenca) is an Ecuadorian lawyer, writer and politician. She was on 9 February 1997 to February 11th 1997 performing the functions of the President as Vice President of the first female head of state of their country.

Arteaga from 1986 to 1988, the Partido Social Cristiano member of the City Council of Cuenca. Subsequently, she was active in various cultural and political functions. Under President Sixto Durán Ballén it was from 1992, first Secretary of State for culture and education minister from 1994. Then she left because of disagreements with the president over religious instruction in schools from office. She then founded his own party, the Movimiento Independiente para una República Auténtica ( MIRA ), and a candidate in the presidential elections of 1996 successfully as a vice presidential candidate, together with Abdala Bucaram presidential candidate from the Partido Roldosista Ecuatoriano. She then became Vice President under Bucarám. When this was declared by Parliament in 1997 as incapable was not clear who would be his successor. The Parliament President Fabián Alarcón could be successful with the help of the Congress against the incumbent Vice President Arteaga, who officiated in the meantime for two days as head of state. In 1998, she ran unsuccessfully for the presidency and then retired from politics back. She has since worked primarily as a writer and journalist.

From 2004 to 2007 she served as Secretary General of the Organization of the Amazon littoral states, ACTO.
