Sabah Museum

The Sabah Museum ( Mal. Muzium Sabah ) is the museum of the State of Sabah in Malaysia. It is situated on a 17 acre site on the located in the state capital Kota Kinabalu hill Bukit Istana Lama. The museum complex houses not only the actual museum but also an ethno- botanical garden, a zoo and an open-air museum. The main building is also the Sabah Art Gallery Art Gallery is housed.

The departments of the museum include the topics of Islamic civilization, archeology and history, natural history, and ceramics and brassware. The aim of the museum is the collection, preservation, conservation and documentation of ethnographic, archaeological, historical, numismatic, art-historical, botanical, zoological and mineralogical collections from Sabah and conducting research on important and interesting topics from the history, the culture and the social and natural history of Sabah.

History

The Sabah Museum was opened at the instigation of the Sabah Society on 15 July 1965 in a warehouse in the Gaya Street, Kota Kinabalu and is therefore in the succession of the previous British North Borneo Museum in Sandakan. The the state of Sabah last will and testament bequeathed collection of George Cathcart Woolley, consisting of photographs, diaries, and numerous utensils, formed the basis of the museum. The first curator of the museum was E. J. Berwick. In 1981 it came under the supervision of the Ministry of Community institutions and from 1982 the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports was responsible.

In 1984 it moved to its present location - the former location of the seat of government, and then the location of the Dewan Negeri Sabah Undangan - to. The opening ceremony took place on 11 April 1984 in the presence of the Yang di - Pertuan Agong.

The until 2012 resided in the premises of the Museum " Sabah Art Gallery " pulled in early 2013 in its own building near the Jalan Penampang in Luyang District has to offer.
