Kota Kinabatangan

Kinabatangan or Kota Kinabatangan is a town in the Malaysian state of Sabah. It belongs to the same administrative district (District Kinabatangan ) and is 132 km in a straight line south-west of Sandakan. The city is part of the area Sandakan Division, which includes the districts Beluran, Kinabatangan, Sandakan and Tongod.

Demography

The population of the city is, according to the last census, 10,256 inhabitants. As in many other cities in Sabah, there are also a considerable number of illegal immigrants from the nearby Philippines, mainly from Sulu and Mindanao, which are not registered in the population statistics.

Geography

The city derives its name from the nearby river Sungai Kinabatangan. The environment consists of river rainforest. The terrain is wet and damp and marshy lowlands are home to the proboscis monkeys.

In the Kinabatangan region also contains the Gomantong Caves, a highly branched cave system, which is by the resident species of bats and swiftlets, swallow -like birds whose nests are the main ingredient of the so-called bird's nest soup, known.

Economy

The economic activities in the area around Kinabatangan focused on the planting of oil palm, forestry enterprises and the timber industry.
