Tamparuli

Federal State

Tamparuli is a small town on the west coast of the state of Sabah in Malaysia. It lies about 30 kilometers northeast of the state capital of Kota Kinabalu and is part of the district of Tuaran area West Coast Division. Tamparuli is a sub-district of Tuaran.

Demography

Of the 31,000 inhabitants Tamparulis include 75 % of the Kadazan - Dusun ethnic group, followed by Chinese ( 15%) and Bajau ( 8%).

Origin of the name

The name Tamparuli borrows the words Di tampar oleh air, which means beaten about by the water. It is said that once Tamparuli should be sought from bruneischen dealers it but did not manage because of the swift current to reach the river upstream settlement. Later Di tampar oleh air was then shortened to Tamparuli.

History

The town's origins date back to a village that stood on the raised place on the river bank and was known as Kampung Pengait. The name means village of headhunters. Records of British colonialists started in the 1930s; may be found activities of the North Borneo Chartered Company, however, already taken much earlier.

About the City

Like many small towns in Sabah the city consists of some newer, built in concrete construction houses, and also from old wooden houses. Tamparuli is located on the highway from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan and is therefore a popular stop for a rest. Tamparuli is the starting point for white-water rafting on the Sungai Kiulu.
