History

Long before Sabah moved into the focus of the British, there had already been an American attempt to colonize the country. The American Consul Charles Lee Moses [note 1] ever had a 10 -year lease agreement with the Sultan of Brunei Abdul Mumin and with its successor Pengiran Temenggung closed in August 1865, which guaranteed him land rights in various areas of Sabah. In quick profit considered the consul sold its concessions already on September 9, 1865 again. The new tenants, two American merchants named Joseph William Torrey Harris and Thomas Bradley and the Chinese Wo Hang then founded the American Trading Company of Borneo and decided to establish a colony in Kimani. In December 1865 Torrey founded by 12 Americans and 60 Chinese settlement " Ellena ". The plan to make the colony attractive by the cultivation of sugar cane, tobacco, and rice for more settlers, but failed after a short time. In 1866 Ellena was due to lack of capital, labor shortages, riots among the workers and serious illnesses abandoned. Harris died in 1866 and 1883 Torrey returned back to America, where he died in Boston, Massachusetts in 1884. Before the end of the lease succeeded Torrey in January 1875, his rights to North Borneo to the consul of Austria - Hungary in Hong Kong, the German -born Gustav Baron Overbeck to sell.

To date, the exact location of Ellena is unknown, sure, however, that there was the colony on the territory of today Kimani. It is also believed that the wooden shophouses dating back to those Chinese who had remained on the task of Ellena in the region.

Historic architecture

Kimani is one of the cities along the west coast, from whose historical development is very little to see. Only a single shop house with annex from the period before the Second World War has been preserved. Since Kimani is one of the most depressed cities of the West Coast, the receipt of this shophouse is questionable; already include the construction in a state of neglect.

Demography

The population is, according to the last census, 1,759 inhabitants and consists mainly of Malay and Kadazan - Dusun. It is expected that the demographic development of Kimani is strongly promoted in the coming years through the establishment of the Sabah Oil and Gas Terminal ( SOG ).

Infrastructure

Kimani is situated on the A2 motorway (Pan Borneo Highway) and is equipped with a breakpoint at the railway Kota Kinabalu - Tenom Sabah State Railway connected.
