Federal State

Papar is a town in the Malaysian state of Sabah. Papar is part of the same administrative district (District Papar ), it is 38 kilometers south of the state capital of Kota Kinabalu. The city is part of the region West Coast Division to which the districts of Kota Kinabalu, Ranau, Kota Belud, Tuaran, Penampang, Putatan and Papar belong.

Papar is next to Tanjung Aru, Beaufort and Tenom an important station of the Sabah State Railway. The city serves travelers from the southern towns Sipitang and Beaufort as a stopover on the way to Kota Kinabalu.

History

The name ' Papar ' comes from Brunei, meaning " flat, open country ." Prior to the administration by the English crown Papar was ruled by princes Bruneischen. Soon after, Papar was administered by the Datu Amir Bahar, a senior official within the Cabinet of the Sultanate. 1877 Papar came under the rule of Gustav Overbeck and Alfred Dent and the brothers Edward Dent.

In ancient times lived Papar from the slave trade. After the North Borneo Chartered Company took over the administration of North Borneo in 1881, the slave trade in accordance with the conditions laid down in the charter party statutes was abolished.

The first British administrator of Papar was HL Leicester. He began his service in February 1878 with the firm intention to improve revenue Papars. However, it turned out that Leicester was unable to come to terms with the local chiefs. The North Borneo Chartered Company replaced Leicester therefore by Alfred Hart Everett.

Another role played Papar in the Mat- Salleh Rebellion. As one of the territories that were not under an independent tulin the Sultan of Brunei but only a local chieftain, they were among the supporters of Mat Salleh. When the North Borneo Chartered Company tried to bring this tulin under their control, residents responded by exposing them to trade in the Company and instead shifted to an independent territory in Kawang.

Islam

City

The city lies on the southern bank of the Papar River, very close to the sea. There are salt marshes with extensive mangrove forests of Nypa fruticans ( Nipapalmen ). Traffic
