Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardy

The Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardy are since 2003 a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Northern Italy.

The nine Sacri Monti ( Sacred Mountains) of northern Italy are spacious chapel buildings and other places of pilgrimage that were built in the late 16th and 17th centuries on mountains and lakes and were dedicated to each specific aspects of the Christian faith. In addition to their symbolic and spiritual meaning they are well adapted for its beauty and the landscape. They hold numerous works of art, such as paintings and sculptures.
