Noto

Noto is a city of Syracuse in Sicily region of Italy with 23,600 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012). Noto is one of the Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto, which have been declared by Unesco as a World Heritage.

Location and data

Noto is located 35 km southwest of Syracuse, the southern boundary of Iblei to 159 m slm. Residents work primarily in agriculture, industry and tourism.

The train station is on the railway line Caltanissetta Gela - Syracuse.

Noto is a bishopric.

The districts are Marina di Noto, San Corrado di Fuori and Testa dell ' Acqua.

The neighboring municipalities are Avola, Canicattini Bagni, Sampieri (RG), Modica (RG), Pachino, Palazzolo Acreide rosolini and Syracuse.

History

About 6 km north-west of the modern town lies the ancient Neton (Latin Netum, now called Noto Antica or Noto Vecchia ), which was founded by the tribe of the Siculi, came early in the sphere of Syracuse. From 263 BC the city was officially opened by Hiero II dominates, later they came as civitas foederata under Roman rule.

Excavations have brought the sikelische necropolis, Hellenistic tombs and catacombs to light.

Among the Arabs (from 862 ) Noto achieved in the Middle Ages national significance and was until 1091 the last Muslim bastion in Italy.

The present city was built from 1703 to the southeast of Noto Antica, which was completely destroyed by an earthquake in 1693. Then Noto was rebuilt as planned and uniform in the style of Sicilian Baroque. City architect Rosario Gagliardi was. The architect Vincenzo Sinatra wore his buildings in the city we know today.

Cityscape and monuments

When building the new city a rectangular street grid was used. The preferred building material for churches and palaces was brighter tufa from the environment.

Noto is one of the Sicilian Baroque towns. She is one of the 2002 World Heritage Site by UNESCO in late Baroque towns of the Val di Noto.
