Salmo balcanicus

Salmo balcanicus is a species of fish in the salmon family (Salmonidae ), which is endemic in the northwest of Lake Ohrid on the Albanian- Macedonian border and at its discharge. Since the spawning grounds are installed at the outlet of the lake by a weir and two dams, the species is possibly extinct.

Features

Salmo balcanicus reaches a length of 40 centimeters, and possibly more. Outside it's the Ohrid trout ( Salmo letnica ) and Salmo very similar aphelios, but differs from these species by its pale pink flesh. Head and body are silvery with black spots. Red spots are present mainly in the lateral line organ.

Way of life

The species spawns from October to January at the outflow of the lake, which is separated from the spawning in January and February and the type Salmo letnica to July spawning on the east coast of the lake in May Salmo aphelios in reproduction.
