Sankt Margarethen, Germany

St. Margaret is a municipality in the district of Steinburg, in Schleswig- Holstein. It belongs to the Office Wilstermarsch. The municipality consists of the villages Stuven and Osterbünge.

Geography and transport

St Margaret is located on the lower reaches of the Elbe River eight kilometers east of Brunsbuttel and the mouth of the North Sea-Baltic Canal. Through the village the main road 431 and the German Ferries runs.

History

St. Margaret is first mentioned in 1344 as Elredeluete. The municipality was formerly Elredefleth, but was so threatened by the flow of the Elbe, that they demolished and relocated to its present location. The new church was dedicated in July 1500 at Margarethentag.
