Schiavi di Abruzzo

Schiavi di Abruzzo is a municipality in the province of Chieti, in the Abruzzo region in Italy with 904 inhabitants.

The name Schiavi indicates a historical colonization by Slavs.

Geography

Schiavi di Abruzzo is located 77 km south-east of Chieti and 165 km east of Rome and 37 kilometers from the Adriatic coast.

The town is located on a ridge of the Monti di Ferentani, a promontory of the Abruzzo above the border river to the region Molise, the Trigno. The neighboring municipalities are Agnone (IS) Belmonte del Sannio (IS) Castelguidone, Castiglione Messer Marino, Poggio Sannita (IS) Salcito (CB), Trivento (CB). The municipality extends over a height level of 254 m slm on Trigno to Monte Pizzuto 1290 m slm enough.

Schiavi di Abruzzo is a member of the Comunità Montana Alto Vastese.

History

Schiavi di Abruzzo was probably originally inhabited since ancient times by the Samnites, before it became a Roman municipium.

Four kilometers south of the village, a pre-Roman temple complex of 3 was from 1964 - 2nd century BC excavated and partially reconstructed. The larger temple has run a socket on the nine steps up. The pediment was supported by four Ionic columns that are in the area today. The smaller, partially reconstructed temple still holds remnants of its mosaic floor. Numerous finds of pottery were brought to the National Museum in Chieti.

Piero Paolo Sciarra (independent) was elected in June 2004 to the mayor. The 12 local councils composed of three citizens lists.
