Schwenda is a town in the southern Harz in the district of Mansfeld- South Harz in Saxony- Anhalt.

Geographical Location

Schwenda is 450 meters above sea level. in the lower resin on the country road that leads from the Grand Auersberg about Karlsrode after Roßla.

History

The town was first mentioned in a document in 532 as " Wenda under the mountain in Harzgau ". Schwenda was the property of the Counts of Stolberg and was in office Hayn ( resin ) of Stolberg- Stolberg County. Until 1815 it belonged to the Electorate of Saxony, and then got to the administrative district of the Prussian province of Saxony Merseburg.

1819 lived in Schwenda 597 inhabitants in 110 houses.

From 1952 to 1990 Schwenda belonged to the East German district hall.

On 1 January 2010 the municipalities Schwenda, Bennungen, Breitenstein, Breitungen, Dieter village, Drebsdorf, Hainrode, Hayn ( resin) Kleinleinungen, Questenberg Roßla, Rottleberode and Uftrungen merged to form the new municipality of South Harz. At the same time the management of community - Roßla Suedharz, belonged to the Schwenda was dissolved.

Attractions

The Evangelical Church of St Cyriac and Nicolai is a baroque central, built from 1736 to 1738 by Johann Friedrich Penther. It is modeled after the Frauenkirche in Dresden and St. Peter's Church in Rome.

The octagonal rotunda, resting on eight pillars, has an external height of 34 m and an inner diameter of 15 m.
