Semikarakorsk

Semikarakorsk (Russian Семикаракорск ) is a city in Rostov Oblast (Russia) with 23,884 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located about 140 km northeast of the Oblasthauptstadt Rostov -on-Don on the left bank of the Don, above the mouth of the Sal

Semikarakorsk is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

The nearest railway station is 25 km north of Ust- Donetskaya.

History

The Staniza Semikarakorskaja of the Don Cossacks was first mentioned in documents in 1672. Due to frequent flooding the Cossack village was moved several times. Since 1845 she was on site of the present city.

During the Second World War the Cossack village Semikarakorskaja was occupied in the summer of 1942 by the German Wehrmacht and recaptured on January 4, 1943 by troops of the newly formed Southern Front of the Red Army.

1958 received the Staniza as Semikarakorski the status of an urban-type settlement. On May 25, 1972, the city charter was presented on the occasion of the 300th anniversary.

Culture and sights

Not far from the town are the remains of a Khazar town and fortress. In the Staniza Kotschetowskaja there is a museum dedicated to the Cossacks writer Vitaly Sakrutkin (1908-1984), who lived there for many years.

Economy

In Semikarakorsk there are mainly companies in the food industry ( canning, cheese, meat processing), as well as a textile, a ceramics factory and the company Baumatialienwirtschschaft.
