Zernograd

Sernograd (Russian Зерноград ) is a city in Rostov Oblast (Russia) with 26 842 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located in the northern Caucasus foothills about 70 km southeast of Oblasthauptstadt Rostov on Don, near the headwaters of the Don estuary also near the opening into the Sea of ​​Azov Kagalnik.

Sernograd is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

The town lies on the railway line opened in 1915 (Rostov ) Bataisk - Salsk.

History

The site was developed in connection with the construction of the railway line Rostov - Salsk ( station Torgowaja ) in 1915 as station Werbljud (Russian for camel ).

1929 here was a larger crops breeding and experimental institution established; the grown place received in 1933 the status of an urban-type settlement under the name Sernowoi (of Russian serno for cereals).

In 1951 the city charter was granted. In 1960 the city its present name.

Economy

In Sernograd there are factories for hydraulic power units and for agricultural machinery and operation of the food industry. The city is the center of an important agricultural region (grain, sunflower seeds, cattle and horses ).

In the city the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute is established for cereal breeding.
