Shawmut (MBTA-Station)

Shawmut is the name of a metro station of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority ( MBTA ) in Boston's Dorchester, Massachusetts in the United States. It provides access to the Ashmont branch of the line Red Line.

History

In 1872, the Old Colony Railroad took over the Shawmut Branch Railroad, the predecessor of today's Red Line route. The old route included stops at the Melville Avenue and Centre Street, which were summarized in 1884 the station Shawmut. 1893 took over the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad operation of the Old Colony Railroad. 1924 Boston Elevated Railway bought the Shawmut Branch Railroad and parts of Milton Branch Railroad for the planned expansion of its line Cambridge - Dorchester, today's Red Line. The station was opened together with the terminus of Ashmont on 1 September 1928 as an extension of the existing route and completely renovated in 1981 and 2009 respectively.

The metro station is located at the Dayton Street. He is the only underground station of the Red Line south of the station Andrew and completely accessible.
