Sigismund Gelenius

Gelenius Sigismund ( Zikmund Czech Hruby z Jelení; * 1497 in Prague, † 1554 in Basel) was a writer, scholar and one of the leading Czech scholars of the 16th century.

Life

The son of Rehor Hruby z Jelení studied in Prague and on the advice of his father from 1509 onwards in Italy. After his studies, he traveled through Italy, Germany and France. After his return he was unhappy with the situation at the Czech University in 1523 and went to Basel. He found a job as a lecturer in one of his most famous printing time Froben. For a time he worked with Erasmus of Rotterdam.

Works

The importance of his publications is not in his own work, but in comments to works which he worked as a lecturer, and in his translations from Greek and Latin.
