Simon, Count of Ponthieu

Simon of Dammartin († 1239 ) was a Count of Aumale and Ponthieu. He was a son of Count Aubry II of Dammartin, his older brother was Count Rainald I of Dammartin.

Life

Together with his father and brother Simon was the end of the 12th century on the side of the house Plantagenets against the French king Philip II Augustus. After the death of Richard the Lionheart in 1199 he moved with his brother's side and supported King Philip in the battle against John Lackland. As a reward for his services he received the investiture of the county of Aumale in 1206, which had since 1196 Rainald heard but who had now received the counties of Mortain. In addition, Simon was in 1208 Marie ( † 1250), the only daughter and heiress of Count William II of Ponthieu Talvas and niece of the king, marry and thus to secure the reversion of their heritage.

In the following years, but Simon as his brother of King Philip, who had limited the power of the Lehnsadels in favor of the royal authority distanced. 1211 they stood in open rebellion against the king and joined with Count Ferrand of Flanders, the English - Guelph alliance against France. On July 27, 1214 they fought unlucky in the battle of Bouvines, Raynald was captured and Simon was forced to flee into exile to England. His possessions were confiscated by King Philip and given to his son Philip Hurepel.

After 1223 King Philip Augustus died in the year tried Simon from England to conquer the county of Ponthieu, on which he raised a claim since the death of his father in 1221. He could briefly take Abbeville, however, he was expelled from the population of the city and a relief army of King Louis VIII again. A little later he submitted to the king and received with his wife whose heritage handed, however, greatly reduced by they had to hand over to the Count of Alençon, who was a relative of Mary Saint- Riquier and Doullens. Simon 1234 even received Aumale refunded after the death of Philip Hurepels.

Simon was buried after his death in the Cistercian Abbey of Valloires. His granddaughter, Eleanor of Castile, was married to the English King Edward I.

From his marriage with Marie of Ponthieu out of the house Mello he had four children:
