Singaporean general election, 2011

The 2011 parliamentary elections were held in Singapore on May 7. In this 16th election to the Singaporean Parliament 87 seats were reassigned.

Background

This election was noteworthy for two reasons. Firstly, a generation change took place. 24 new candidates competed for the PAP and sparked numerous parliamentarians from old age. Secondly, since independence it was the first time in the history of the state possible to choose in all constituencies except for a an opposition party.

2011 results

Since the vote in Singapore on the principle of a simple majority vote, results in the following distribution of seats:

  • PAP: 81
  • WP: 6

In the constituency Potong Pasir, who went to the opposition for several elections, missed Lina Chiam, the representative of the SPP, the victory by 115 votes. The turnout was 87.5 %. This is very little, because voting is compulsory in Singapore.
