Somjit Jongjohor

Somjit Jongjohor ( Thai: สม จิตร จง จอ หอ; born 19 January 1975) is a Thai boxer. He was world champion in 2003 and 2008 Olympic Champion flyweight.

Career

Jongjohor occurred only at the age of 24 years on the international boxing scene in appearance than he with a win over Sapok Anak Biki from Malaysia won the title in the light flyweight at the 20th Southeast Asian Championships in Brunei. A first success, which should still follow many successes. First, however, he lost at the 20th Asia Championship 1999 in Tashkent flyweight against Bolat Schumadilow from Kazakhstan and was thus at this championship not place.

In Asia, he still achieved the following outstanding victories: he was 2001 winner at the 21th Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur flyweight with a win over Rahib Ahmad from Malaysia. In 2002 he won both the 21 Southeast Asian Championships in Seremban / Malaysia as well as in the 14th Asian Games in Busan / South Korea. In Seremban, he defeated in the finals of the fly weight May Kangde from China and in Busan he defeated in the final of the same weight class Nouman Karim from Pakistan to points ( 26:7 ).

In this context it was spoken in various publications from the fact that Jonghohor would have achieved these past successes as a " teenager ". In the year of birth 1975 but he was already 27 years old in 2002, which fueled speculation that he was born later than 1975. It would also be highly unusual for the Asian region, that he started his international career boxers only 24 years (1999).

In the 23rd Southeast Asian Games 2003 in Hanoi / Vietnam, he again won the flyweight title. He defeated there in the final battle Nothin Holapatiphone from Laos. In the same year he scored in Bangkok, including in Asia, the hitherto biggest success of his career boxers. He became world amateur champion at flyweight. He won it on over Ramazan Ballioglu from Turkey by demolition in the third round, on Batonmunku Wankijew from Belarus ( 10:5 ), Yuriorkis Gamboa of Cuba ( 23:22 ), Rustam Rakhimov from Germany ( 12:5 ) and in the final battle the defending champion Jérôme Thomas of France ( 24:17 ) on points.

No luck had Jongjohor at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. After he had defeated in his first fight, Kim Ki -suk of South Korea by points ( 22:12), he met in the second round again on the Cuban Yuriorkis Gamboa, whom he defeated this time despite a good fight by points ( 21:26). He thus retired from the Olympic boxing tournament. At the Asia Championships 2005 in Ho Chi Minh City, he was defeated in the quarterfinals against Karim Nouman and came in the final of this championship only to fifth place. At the World Championship 2005 in China Mianyang he lost flyweight same from his first fight against Cuban Andry Laffita just by points ( 14:16 ) and different unplaced.

Very good performances were Jongjohor at the 15th Asian Games 2006 in Doha and at the 2007 World Championships in Chicago. With two championships he won second place in the flyweight. In Doha, he defeated Anvar Yunusow from Tajikistan ( 25:20 ) and Mirat Sarsenbayev from Kazakhstan ( 20:11 ) and won on points over Yang Bo of China by demolition in the third round. But in the final he lost surprisingly to Violito Payla from the Philippines, he had beaten before on other occasions, three times, by points ( 15:31 ). At the World Championships in Chicago he defeated Mirat Sarsenbayev ( 17:8 ), Rafael Kaczor of Poland ( 15:3 ) and Vincenzo Picardi of Italy ( 13:2 ) each superior on points. In the final battle he lost almost ( 9:13 ) against the Americans Rau'shee Warren on points.

With this placement, Jongjohor secured at the same time to qualify for the staged in Beijing in 2008 Olympic Games. He won in April this year in Bangkok at the Kings Cup tournament at flyweight with wins over Kyousuke Sawada from Japan and Luvsantseren Zorigtbaatar from Mongolia. In the final battle of this tournament, the reigning world champions came in light flyweight Shiming Zhou from China against him because of a slight injury not to. In May 2008 Jongjohor also finished at the 1st AIBA President's Cup in Taipei / Taiwan Flyweight the first place. In August 2008 Jongjohor then took to Thailand at the Olympics in part and was Olympic champion in the flyweight. With point victories over Eddie Valenzuela of Guatemala, Samir Mammadow from Azerbaijan, Anvar Yunusow and Vincenzo Picardi he reached the final and could you there prevail against Cuban Andry Laffita 8:2.

After his career Jongjohor worked as a moderator in the Thai television. He has a degree in physical education teacher and received a Ehrerdoktortitel the Faculty of Education, Ramkhamhaeng University.
