Somontano de Barbastro

Somontano de Barbastro ( Aragonese Semontano de Balbastro ) is a Comarca (administrative unit ) of the Aragon Autonomous Community in Spain. It lies in the center of the province of Huesca, and has an area of ​​1166.6 km ² 22,740 inhabitants ( 2002). Its capital is Barbastro, also the largest of the 29 municipalities ( municipios ) of the comarca.

The Comarca is bordered to the west by the Hoya de Huesca, in the northern part of the Comarca Sobrabe, on the east by the Comarcas Ribagorza and La Litera, on the southeast by Cinca Medio and on the south by the Comarca Monegros.

The main rivers that flow through the Comarca, are the Alcanadre, the Cinca, the Ésera and Vero. The economy is based in the capital Barbastro especially on the food industry, construction and chemical industry. In the other municipalities farming and ranching are the predominant industries. It is grown mainly for corn and wine. Viticulture has the Denomination of Origin Somontano.

The 29 municipalities of the comarca are: Abiego, Adahuesca, Alquézar, Azara, Azlor, Barbastro, Barbuñales, Berbegal, Bierge, Castejón del Puente, Castillazuelo, Colungo, Estada, Estadilla, El Grado, Hoz y Costean, Ilche ​​, Laluenga, Laperdiguera, Lascellas - Ponzano, Naval, Olvena, Peralta de Alcofea, Peraltilla, Pozán de Vero, Salas Altas, Salas Bajas, Santa María de Dulcis and Torres de Alcanadre.
