Geography

The eastern border of the largest national parks in Tasmania is located about 95 km from Hobart. The park covers an area of ​​6052 km ² extending over large parts of the southwest of the island. It was originally founded in 1955 under the name of Lake Pedder National Park around Lake Pedder. Finally, after repeated enlargements of the park he got its present name in 1990. He is now the largest national park in Tasmania and is a UNESCO World Heritage Tasmanian wilderness.

The park is known for its wilderness and solitude. The weather is very changeable and rough. Aboriginal people already settled here 25,000 years ago, Europeans came in the 19th century first time in this area. Since there are hardly any permanent residents, and consequently only minor effects on nature.

Throughout the park there is only one road, it leads to Strathgordon. The southern and western part of the park can only be reached by foot, boat or from the air. The runway in Melaleuca, in the southwest, is essentially the National Parks Service. Access to the sea is best done via Port Davey or Bathurst Harbour.

Wildlife

The National Park is the main breeding area of the highly endangered orange-bellied Parakeet, which can be observed by visitors to the parks most easily near Melaleuca.

Hiking trails

Two main trails lead through the park. One leads from Lake Pedder by Melaleuca, the other from Cockle Creek to Melaleuca. The walks are to recommend only for experienced hikers, as they claim together about ten to 14 days. With a flight to Melaleuca can divide the hike, or only do from there for day hikes on the way. In addition, there are other, often very demanding, hiking trails. Run to the West and east of the Arthur Range, Precipitous Bluff, the Südwestkap and Federation Peak, probably the most difficult and challenging trail Australia.
