Spui (river)

The Spui is a 16 km long water in the delta of the Rhine and the Meuse. Its width is 130 to 255 meters, and it has an average depth of 5.55 meters.

It branches at Oud- Beijerland of the Oude Maas from their left, and opens into the Haring Vliet. The water flows, depending on the high or low tide, towards Harling Vliet or Oude Maas. The Spui is the dividing line between the former island Putten and Hoeksche Waard. Opposite Goudsward opens the Bernisse via an intake plant in the Spui. Between Nieuw- Beijerland and Hekelingen a car ferry, and bicycle and pedestrian ferry connects Oud- Bijerland with Beerenplaat and Oegstgeest. There is no bridge over the Spui.

Along the Spuis are known recreation areas, such as the Oude Tol at Oud- Bijerland that Zonneweide at Pershil or the Costa del Spui in Goudsward. Be careful when swimming in the Spui. The tidal currents reach speeds of several kilometers per hour.
