Srokowo

Srokowo [ srɔkɔvɔ ] ( German Drengfurth, Polish until 1950 Dryfort ) is a village in Poland in the Warmia and Mazury in powiat Kętrzyński. It is about 20 kilometers northeast of Kętrzyn and twelve kilometers west of Węgorzewo in the historic East Prussia on the river Omet.

History

Originally Srokowo was a small village on the left bank of Anger Omet. The actual town was laid out in a very regular form on the right bank and received Kulm law in 1405, the old Angersdorf on the road to baleen evolved into the suburbs.

Drengfurth always remained a small town with a population of 3,000 (1885: 1,693 1910: 2,162 1939: 2,293 ). In addition to agriculture and handicrafts sawmills were the major businesses. Since 1887, the city was terminus of a light railway to Rastenburg.

Towards the end of the Second World War the city on 27 January 1945 was occupied by the Red Army and handed over after a few weeks in Polish administration. At this time, still lived 120 inhabitants in 60% destroyed city, the rest had fled before. During the year 1945 attracted Polish settlers from southern and eastern Poland, but the city lost on December 28, 1945 town charter and was demoted to the village.

In 1950, the place in honor of the geographer and president of the Polish Commission for the determination ( renaming ) and standardization of place names in the " recovered " (formerly German ) regions was responsible was ( Komisja Ustalania Nazw Miejscowości ), Stanisław Srokowski (1872 - 1950) renamed Srokowo.
