St. Peterzell
St. Peter's cell was until December 31, 2008, a municipality in the constituency Toggenburg in the canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland.
In the vote on 21 October 2007, the residents voted for a merger with Brunnadern and Ebersol to the new community Necker January 1, 2009.
Geography
St. Peter Zell is located on the River Necker. The neighboring municipalities were Hemberg SG, Schöngrund, Schwellbrunn and Degersheim SG.
History
The name St. Peter cell goes back to a monastery-like device. This was mentioned in a document as a " cella sancti Petri " for the first time in 1178. Originally it was probably a hermit settlement. 1214 was designated as the monastery of St. Peter Zell. In the 1220er -Jahren the establishment had only the rank of a provost and stood as a priory of the Benedictine Abbey Alt St. Johann. In 1227 the name was transferred to the place.
Already in the 11th century united in St. Peter's cell three pilgrimage routes. Today, take two sections of the Camino together.
