Geography

Location

Stadtlauringen lies with its center at the Lauer that a few hundred meters west of the north of Stadtlauringen nearby hamlet Oberlauringen springs and flows Niederlauer in Franconian Saale. On their way there in wait flows through a number of other places such as Maßbach, Poppenlauer and Muennerstadt. In the area of the district Altenmuenster is the Ellertshäuser lake. This reservoir is at 33 hectares the largest lake in Lower Franconia. In the north- east is a part of the community sector in the Haßbergen. These include the deciduous hill, highest point of the district of Schweinfurt and second highest in the Haßberge.

History

The first documentary mention is known from the year 794. 1484 gave Prince-Bishop Rudolf II of Scherenberg the place Lauringen, Niederlauringen later, the town and market rights and jurisdiction. Since that time, the place is called Stadtlauringen. The city rights were returned in 1818, the market law could be maintained.

The coat of arms dates from the time of city status. Since 1520 it shows a continuous red paws silver cross, the left ends of which cross arm in one hand and so is the market cross; jurisdiction symbolized in the lower right angle slumped silver sword with a golden hilt.

In the district Oberlauringen at least since the 19th century Jewish families were resident who formed a Jewish community and at the Friedrich- Rückert -Straße 13-19 synagogue built. At the November pogrom of 1938, the church was destroyed in the interior of SA men; some Jewish residents were expelled from their homes. On the outside wall of the misappropriated use building, a plaque at his former function.

Incorporations

On January 1, 1972, until then independent municipality Sulzdorf was incorporated in Stadtlauringen. On May 1, 1978 Altenmuenster, Ballingshausen, Birnfeld, Fuchsstadt, Maile, Oberlauringen, betting rings and Wetzhausen were added.

Mayor is currently Friedel rear Lauer. He joined on 1 May 2008 after successful re-election with 89.96 % of the vote his second term of office on.

Parish Church

The Catholic church has as patron saint St. John the Baptist. At the late-Gothic tower, a baroque nave of 1732/43 is attached. From the 1960s to 1972 the church was enlarged and renewed. Kerlachkapelle

The Catholic Kerlachkapelle than patronage of Mary Pain (September 15 ); second patron is St. Aloysius. The chapel is on the second highest point in the city Lauri gene, the Kerlachsberg. The neo-Romanesque church is open on Sundays and public holidays from Easter to All Saints.

Personalities

  • Georg Nespitzer (16th century), important personality of the Anabaptist movement, was born in Stadtlauringen.
  • Friedrich Rückert (1788-1866), poet and orientalist, spent his youth in today's district Oberlauringen, discussed in the cycle memories from the childhood of a village bailiff son
  • Jörg GEUDER (1861-1935), teacher, poet, writer and voice nurse, lived and worked for 22 years in the district today Oberlauringen.
  • Michael Ballhaus ( born 1935 ), an important German cinematographer, spent several years of his childhood in Wetzhausen, where his parents ran a theater, which is the precursor of the Frankish Castle Theatre Maßbach.
