Stéphane Richer (ice hockey defenceman)

Stéphane Jean -Gilles Richer ( born April 28, 1966 in Hull, Quebec ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player (defender) and current trainer, who during his active career, among others, from 1992 to 1995 for the Tampa Bay Lightning, Boston Bruins and Florida Panthers of the National Hockey League played.

Career

After a few years in his home at the Hull Olympiques in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Richer completed his first professional years in the American Hockey League and International Hockey League. From 1992 to 1995 he played in the National Hockey League. His teams were the Boston Bruins, Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning, but Richer prevailed there and never played mainly in the Minor Leagues. In the 1994/95 season the Canadians joined the Adler Mannheim and played there until 2002. With them he was in 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2001 German Masters. The season 2002/ 03 spent the defender at the Frankfurt Lions. At the end of this season, he had to retire due to a serious knee injury of his career as a player.

The shirt number 25, which had Richer worn during his career in Mannheim, is no longer given by the Adler Mannheim. At the opening of the SAP Arena in 2005, his jersey was hung symbolically under the hall roof. The Adler Mannheim honored thus Richer especially for the outstanding success he achieved with the team, and his great fighting spirit in the jersey of the eagle. He is so beside Harold Kreis, Marcus Kuhl and Rene Corbet to the Mannheim players whose jersey numbers are no longer awarded in Mannheim.

In the 2003 /04 season, he worked as an assistant coach under Rich Chernomaz at the Frankfurt Lions and ended the season with these German masters. During the 2004/05 season he joined first as an assistant coach for the Adler Mannheim. After the dismissal of Helmut de Raaf Stéphane Richer took over the position of head coach. Under his leadership, the team reached the finals series against the Polar Bears Berlin, but was lost. In December 2005, he was replaced by Greg Poss as a trainer in Mannheim. As of January 2006, he was responsible for the Kassel Huskies. In the season 2006/ 07 the Canadians succeeded the runner in the 2nd Hockey League. In the 2007 /08 season he reached with the Kassel Huskies the resurgence in the DEL. His contract in Kassel was valid until 2010 for the 2nd Hockey League and a DEL.

For the 2010/11 season Richer joined as a coach and sports director for Premier League rivals Hamburg Freezers. In December 2010 he gave up the coaching reins in order to take better care of their duties as sports director can.

Private

Stéphane Richer is married to Josée Richer and has three daughters. He lives in Halstenbek near Hamburg.
