Swiss Performance Index

The Swiss Performance Index ( SPI) is next to the Swiss Market Index (SMI ) of the most closely followed stock index in Switzerland. It is calculated and published by the SIX Swiss Exchange. The SPI includes almost all the listed Swiss corporations. He therefore regarded as a total market index for the Swiss stock market. The SPI is divided into numerous sub-indices by sector and capitalization. Together, these indices represent the SPI family. The investment universe of the SPI family currently includes 221 shares (as at 30 April 2011).

Base date

The SPI is calculated from 1 June 1987. On this date ( base date ), the index was at 1000, was - points set.

Account of dividends

The SPI is a dividend-adjusted stock index ( Total Return Index). This means that dividend payments in the index development are taken into account. With each dividend payment, the divisor of the index is adjusted. - However, a non-dividend- corrected variant exists ( price index) of the SPI.

Title universe

The SPI comprises according to SPI index Regulations all equities which have a primary listing on the SIX Swiss Exchange, with two exceptions:

  • Equity securities with freely tradable share ( free float ) of less than 20 % are not included in the SPI due to their limited liquidity ( marketability ).
  • Investment companies are not included in the SPI in order to avoid double counting. Only when an investment company invests exclusively in non- primary listing on the SIX business, they can be taken at their own request to the SPI.

In principle, only stocks of Swiss companies are recorded with a legal company based in Switzerland or the Principality of Liechtenstein to the SPI. On request, a primary-listed company will be added based abroad, if it meets certain conditions in relation to company law reporting requirements.
