Sysselmann
Sýslumaður is Faroese and means Sysselmann. A sýsla (Danish SYSSEL ) is now a police district in the Faroe Islands. There are 6 sýslur.
- Northern Isles ( Borðoy, Fugloy, Kalsoy, Kunoy, Svinoy and Viðoy )
- Eysturoy
- Streymoy ( with Hestur, Koltur and Nólsoy )
- Vágar ( with Mykines )
- Sandoy ( with Skúvoy and Stóra Dímun )
- Suðuroy ( with Lítla Dímun )
The Sysselmann is therefore the local police chief. Its task is also the collection of customs and the monitoring of grindadráp ( pilot whales ), along with the subsequent distribution of free meat in the population.
The Sysselmänner today are officials of the Kingdom of Denmark and are subject to the Reichsombudsschaft in the Faroe Islands. However, they are usually not Danish, but Faroese.
Sysselmänner there used also in Jutland and Norway. Still bears the Norwegian governor of Svalbard this title, and in Iceland there are according to the domestic Sýslur also Sýslumenn.
