Terence Spinks

Terence " Terry " George Spinks MBE ( born February 28, 1938 in London, † April 26, 2012 in Essex, England ) was a British boxer and trainer.

Career

Spinks 1956 British amateur champion at flyweight and thus qualified for the Olympic Summer Games in Melbourne in 1956, where he won the gold medal in the flyweight. He had the Ukrainians Vladimir Stolnikov, in the semifinals of the French René Libeer and finally in the finals defeated the Romanians Mircea Dobrescu in the preliminary rounds Samuel Harris from Pakistan and Abel Laudonio from Argentina in the quarterfinals. He is the only British boxer in Olympic history who could ever win gold in this weight class, also the youngest British Olympic champion in boxing of all time.

As Richard McTaggart also won the gold medal in the lightweight went from these Olympic Games two British boxer as the winner, a rarity that could be repeated in 2012, having previously been managed only three times (1908, 1920 and 1924).

After he had been denied as an amateur 200 fights and 1956 ABA flyweight champion had been, he joined in April 1957 turned professional and played there more 49 fights, of which he won 41. He was on 27 September 1960 to May 2, 1961 British featherweight champion. He managed to win against the champion from Belgium, England, France, Ghana, Canada, Netherlands and Scotland, and a victory against the eventual champions Jean Pierre Cossemyns.

After his professional career he was boxing coach and managed the South Korean team at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. He was appointed Member of the British Empire in 2002.
