Teshio, Hokkaido

Teshio (Japanese天 塩 町, -chō ) is a town in the district Teshio in the sub-prefecture Rumoi on Hokkaidō.

Etymology

The name comes from Ainu Teshio Teshu -o what "fish weir available " means.

Geography

Teshio lies at the mouth of the same name, the eponymous river (天 塩 川, -gawa ). Another waters is the Kagami - numa (镜 沼, dt " Reflecting Pool ").

History

1878 Teshio was appointed mura (village community). April 1896 the town hall was built. On April 1, 1903 Shosambetsu was spun off as a separate village and on April 1, 1909 Horonobe. On April 1, 1915, was appointed 2nd class municipality and on April 1, 1924 1st class municipality and Chō.
