That's Why God Made the Radio is the 29th album by the Beach Boys and the first since 1996. Was released worldwide June 1, 2012 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Beach Boys.

Formation

The end of 2011, according to rumors, the Beach Boys would again come together in the old line and make a tour and an album. The genesis of the album That's Why God Made the Radio began in the late 1990s. Brian Wilson worked at this time with Joe Thomas on a few songs for his album Imagination. During this collaboration, among others, two or three songs that did not want to publish on his solo album, Brian Wilson emerged. One of the songs was That's Why God Made the Radio. Wilson wanted to keep these songs for a possible new album by the Beach Boys. To initiate the production of a new album by the Beach Boys, Brian Wilson sent his brother Carl Wilson, a demo recording of the piece Lay Down Burden, at that time still the title of Lay Down Your Burden wore. However, Carl Wilson's cancer prevented cooperation. Brian Wilson and Joe Thomas arranged the song around after Carl Wilson's death in the ballad Lay Down, Burden and published them on Brian Wilson's fifth solo album. After Carl Wilson's death, the work on a new album by the Beach Boys were hired.

Years later, Brian Wilson took Thomas to contact and reported that he was working on a new album and wants to use old demo recordings of their earlier collaboration. Wilson, Thomas and Jeffrey Foskett arranged some songs from the audio material present, took demos on and placed them in front of Capitol Records. Overall, Wilson presented the record company four pieces, such as the song That's Why God Made Radio. The label was interested in cooperation, accepted the idea of ​​a new album by the Beach Boys to publish and negotiated a contract for the album.

A short time later, Wilson and Thomas met with Mike Love in a steak house and asked him if he was interested to act as a lyricist and singer with the album. This readily agreed.

Originally, the album was to be called Summer's Gone. But since Mike Love won against Brian Wilson, it was named after the song That's Why God Made the Radio. According to another source, however, it was Brian Wilson himself, who changed the album name because he allegedly was a lot of fun the new work with the other Beach Boys, and he therefore no longer wanted a sad title for the album.

On 16 May 2012, the Beach Boys were encountered while shopping channel QVC to introduce the album That's Why God Made the Radio. During the broadcast, viewers had the opportunity to purchase the album. QVC accepted nearly 20,000 orders. According to estimates by the music industry, the album sold 60000-65000 times until 10 June 2012.

The album reached number three on June 18, 2012 the U.S. Billboard charts. This was That's Why God Made the Radio 's first album since the Beach Boys 15 Big Ones in 1976, which made ​​it into the top 10 of the U.S. Billboard charts.
