Theodor Kirchner

Fear God Theodor Kirchner ( born December 10, 1823 in Neukirchen / Erzgeb; . † September 18, 1903 in Hamburg ) was a German composer, conductor, organist and pianist.

Life

Kirchner has already received early lessons in piano and organ. From 1838 he continued his musical training in Leipzig, where he made the acquaintance of Robert Schumann and Felix Mendelssohn.

After graduating Kirchner joined the first students in the newly founded Conservatory of Leipzig. A short time later, he went on the recommendation of Mendelssohn to Winterthur in Switzerland, where he took up the post of organist at the local parish church. At the same time he gave concerts and worked as a music teacher. From 1862 he worked as a conductor in Zurich, where he headed the subscription concerts of the Universal Music Society ( AMG). Here he made the acquaintance of Johannes Brahms, with whom he subsequently a life-long friendship, and with Friedrich Hegar. In 1868 he married the singer Maria Schmidt in Zurich. From this marriage three children were born: Emmy (1870-1942), Blanka (* 1871, died three months after the birth of cholera ) and Theodor ( 1872-1927 ). In 1872 he left Switzerland and went back to Germany. Stations of his work are from 1872 Meiningen, where he worked as a music teacher, and a year later, Würzburg; Here he held the position of Director of the local music school. From 1876 he worked for several years as a music teacher in Leipzig and moved in 1883 to the Dresden Conservatory. In 1890, Kirchner moved to Hamburg, where almost blind and paralyzed by several strokes in 1903 he died.

His financial situation was very bad life. In 1884, therefore, a fundraising campaign was initiated for him, in which involved among others Edvard Grieg, Hans von Bülow and Carl Reinecke. Theodor Kirchner was a prolific composer. His work is very diverse and complex. As a composer, he renounced his life on great form types and gave his best in expressive character pieces.
