Band History

Founding and first album

Thrice was founded in 1998 by the then 17 -year-old Dustin Kensrue (guitar, vocals) and Teppei Teranishi (guitar) during their high school years. Teppei undertook his skater friend Eddie Breckenridge for the bass guitar, which in turn brought his brother Riley (drums).

In just two days they started with Brian Tochilin their first EP First Impressions in an edition of 1000 pieces. Despite many applications there remained the possibility for larger gigs initially denied and they stood with her at the skate punk oriented music mainly observed at smaller, local events. Your first song recordings are now freely available on the internet.

Published in April 2000 under the label Thrice greenflag Records her first album Identity Crisis, which they achieved a moderate success. During an appearance label owner Louis Posen ( Hopeless, Sub City ) was aware of the band and took them under contract. 2001 Identity Crises was re-released and poses committed Thrice as the opening act for Samiam. Tours with Midtown and Hot Rod Circuit followed.

Major contract

The end of 2001 with producer Brian McTernan Thrice went into the studio and recorded the album The Illusion of Safety on, which was released on 5 February 2002 and made great record labels aware of them. Thrice opted for Iceland Records. The separation of Posen's label Sub City was made " with a heavy heart, but full of confidence " ( Teranishi ).

Already in 2003, released their next album The Artist in the Ambulance, which fully met the expectations of the label and was also successful on a commercial level.

2004 appeared with Apple unplugged sessions an acoustic album of the band, which was sold exclusively through iTunes.

In April 2005, the band released their first DVD If We Could Only See Us Now (the title is a quote from the song So Strange I Remember You from the album Illusion of Safety).

In the first half of 2005, the band spent a lot of time in the studio with producer Steve Osborne. The result was published on 18 October 2005 under the name Vheissu. It differed stylistically relatively strongly from its predecessor, contained more tempo changes, electronic elements and was more influenced by a melancholy gloom. The sales figures were far below those of its predecessor, but it was nominated for the New Pantheon Music Award. 2006 Red Sky EP was released with two new studio songs and four live recordings as the last publication in Iceland Records. Then came the break with the label. However the band that they had parted in friendship. The two parties had so agreed that the band dispensed with outstanding repayments for the cost of production, but the rights get back on the album.

The Alchemy Index

Meanwhile, the band possessed a private studio where she could work out new material. Thrice did not try to build on the success of the music album The Artist in the Ambulance, but walked away with the four-part concept album The Alchemy Index even further from their roots and pushed partially also in progressive rock areas. Guitarist Teppei Teranishi also took over the tasks of the sound equipment and so the band decided not for the first time to an external producer.

The project was published in the form of four EPs, each with six songs that are musically and thematically dedicated to the classic four basic elements of nature: fire, water, earth and air. Two EPs were combined into one release: on 16 October 2007 appeared The Alchemy Index: Vols. I & II - Fire & Water. The Alchemy Index: Vols. III & IV - Earth & Air was released on 18 April 2008.

While the music on Fire reminds resembling the earlier music by Thrice, the band went with Earth entirely new way: All of the equipment was moved and incorporated into a living room was with just two stereo microphones. The main instruments were acoustic guitars, banjo, piano, upright bass and trombone. The aim was to achieve the most natural sound - precisely as it sounds, when a band is sitting together in a room and playing. Air is the most versatile of the four EPs, has as a central theme but a certain melancholy mood. As used on the previous album, the band Vheissu electronic aids, but also built recordings from the wild ( such as the rustling of leaves in the wind ) with a. Water is characterized according to statements of the band from a " crushing sadness ".

The last song of the individual EPs ( Fire - The Flame Deluge, Water - Kings Upon the Main, Air - Silver Wings; Earth - Child of Dust ) are characterized musically by the fact that each has the same intonation was used and lyrically from the I perspective of the respective element is told.

Early leak of the album " Beggars "

On 15 June 2009 the record label Vagrant Records announced via Twitter that the new album will the title ' Beggars ', and that should be released in October 2009. On June 25, told the music magazine Visions that the recordings were completed. In a blog entry on the band's website on July 16 drummer Riley Breckenridge concretized the date of publication and cited the first date 13 October. After the album, however, already appeared three months before the announced date on the internet, the band drew the publication. So the album was released already on August 11 as a download on iTunes, followed by a CD version with bonus material in September.

Dustin Kensrue explained the name " Beggars " ( in German beggar ) on June 18 in an entry on the official blog of the studio band as follows:

Setbacks for the band

The following on the album tour was interrupted by various strokes of fate for the band members. During the North American tour in the fall of 2009 guitarist Teppei Teranishi had the band for personal reasons leave first and was represented by various guest musicians. In January 2010, he explained in a blog post that his mother had died and he could not therefore perceive a planned tour in the UK. Could Teppeis failure nor be compensated for, the tour dates another North American tour in April of the same year had to be canceled because singer Dustin Kensrue also had to leave his family due to an emergency. In September 2010, Thrice went to write to the studio to record the successor of Beggars. While the work of the father of the brothers died Riley (drums) and Ed Breckenridge ( bass), which is why the studio time had to be interrupted. In addition, a depot was broken into and robbed during this forced break, in which the band encamped between different instruments. According to the band, the majority of the instruments was due to the studio time, however, in the studio, so that the worker process on the new album was not hindered.

Major / Minor

Expenses incurred during the since September 2010 held studio sessions pieces were taken in May 2011 in the Red Bull Studios in Los Angeles. Since the recordings for Vheissu it was the first time that the band recorded outside of their self-built studio. The seventh studio album has been released under the title of Major / Minor on September 20, 2011 by Vagrant Records. It contains eleven songs and was produced by Dave Schiffman.

Time-out

On November 21, 2011 Dustin Kensrue explained on the blog of the band, the band will take a break for the foreseeable future. Kensrue justified this with the growing commitment to his family, especially his three daughters. At the beginning of the statement, however, he stressed that this is not the end of the tape was, he, however, currently do not see being able to meet its obligations.

Charitable commitment

Thrice are known to donate a certain portion of the revenue of each album to charity organizations. Thus, it was with The Illusion of Safety a youth center in Los Angeles and The Artist in the Ambulance, the Syrentha Savio Endowment, a society for cancer patients supported. Even after the modest income of the album Vheissu and the daring Alchemy Index project, the band remains true to this principle. A portion of the profits of the Alchemy Index plates goes to the Blood: Water Mission, which has set itself the goal of creating 1000 Drinking Water Fountain in collaboration with local groups in Africa.

On the question of whether it in the increasing difficulty of being able to live by the music would not be obvious to establish reserves for kids and family, rather than to donate the money, replied Eddie Breckenridge: "When I said we were not very rich, I meant from not from a global perspective, but from the American point of view. If we compare ourselves with underdeveloped countries, therefore we alone are rich because we have running water and we can afford a car. That's more than a large percentage of humanity will ever have. "
