Tiedemann Giese

Tiedemann Giese Bartholomew ( born June 1, 1480 Gdansk, † October 23, 1550 in Salvation Mountain ) was a Catholic theologian, Bishop of Kulm and Bishop of Warmia.

Life

The person Tiedemann Giese is connected to the milieu of Nicholas Copernicus. One calls him one of the few friends of the great astronomer. His brother Hermann Giese was married to the daughter of a cousin of Copernicus.

Giese came from the German patrician family Giese who has been resident since the generation of its originating from Unna great-grandfather in the Hanseatic city of Gdansk. His brother Georg Giese headed the family trading company. Already with 24 years Giese was appointed to the Cathedral Chapter of Gdansk. Together with Mauritius Ferber he was a priest at St. Peter and Paul, in 1517, he was appointed ex officio proceedings. Six years later, Giese came as Domkustos for female Castle, the seat of the Bishopric of Warmia. 1538 transferred it to the office of Bishop of Kulm, which he held until 1549. Nicolaus Copernicus bequeathed Tiedemann Giese his writings and left his library to the Cathedral Chapter of Warmia. A son of his brother Georg Giese left Conrad Dasypodius a portrait of Copernicus from the estate of his uncle for the Astronomical Clock in Strasbourg, which served as a template for the painter Tobias tuner, which is the Strasbourg portrait grant it a certain authenticity.

The Prince Bishop Giese was buried next to his relatives and friend Nicholas Copernicus in the woman Strasbourg Cathedral.
