Tomari, Hokkaido

Tomari (Japanese泊 村, -mura ) is a village in the Japanese district Furuu in the sub-prefecture Shiribeshi on Hokkaidō.

Etymology

The name originates from the Tomari Ainu. For the Ainu time was located on the estuary, a place called moyre - tomari what " slower anchorage " means and refers to the weak tidal at this point. Another interpretation is the origin of Ainu hemoy - tomari, which means " Bay of the incoming salmon " means.

Geography

Tomari is located on the Shakotan Peninsula.

In Tomari there are few flat surfaces, but mainly mountain forests. The highest mountain is the Kumaoi (熊 追 山, -yama ) with 805.4 m, which is located on the outskirts of Furubira.

To the north, the island connected to the mainland Benten -jima is (弁 天 岛).

History

1909, included the villages Tomari, Sakazuki (杯 村, -mura ), Okishinai (兴 志 内 村, -mura ), Kayanuma (茅 沼 村, -mura ), Horikappu (堀 株 村, -mura ) to the municipality 2nd class Tomari together. In 1923 the classification as a 1st class municipality. In the same year a district was spun off as a newly established village Hattari, which is a district of Kyōwa district Iwanai today.

1856 was discovered in Tomari coal and with the help of British engineers Kayanuma the coal mine (茅 沼 炭 鉱, Kayanuma Tanko ) opened in 1867, which was the oldest of Hokkaido. Living today just under 2000 people in Tomari, as lived at the height of the coal mining 10,000 from this. The mine was in 1964 and the remaining closed in 1969.

On July 22, 1989, the first reactor block of the Tomari nuclear power plant, and thus the first nuclear power plant in Hokkaido went into operation. On 12 April 1991, the second reactor block and on 10 December 2009, the third and most powerful block followed.

For these reasons, the nickname of the community is also " home village of energy" (エネルギー の ふるさと, enerugī no Furusato ).

Attractions

The origin of the Sakazuki Onsen village (杯 温泉 郷, Sakazuki Onsenkyo ) goes back to 1905 when it became a public bathroom was even. 1975, it was (国民 保养 温泉 地, kokumin Hoyo onsenchi ) appointed by the Japanese Environmental Agency to the National onsen spa. It belongs with the other conditions of the city to Niseko- Shakotan- Otaru coastal Quasi National Park. As the water containing sodium sulphate minerals containing the source is sought for the relief of nerve and muscle pain.

200 m away from the hot springs is the island of Benten -jima.

Tomari has connection to the National Road 229 according to Otaru or Esashi, as well as the prefectural road 342

Economy

The most important employer is the Tomari nuclear power plant, which supplies 30 % of the energy of Hokkaido. Through its Taxes Tomari is the only municipality in Hokkaido has no entitlement to grants from the prefecture.

Other industries are fishing and tourism.

Twinning

Since February 1998 Ikata is in the Japanese prefecture of Ehime, the sister city TOMARIS.
