Toremar

Toremar (abbreviation for Toscana Regional Marittima SpA) is an Italian ferry company, which belonged to the fall of 2011 the Tirrenia group and emerged from the former mail ship service of the state.

Will provide on behalf of the State the island routes in the Mar Tirreno, which are intended to ensure, as a former mail ship services, the continuity of the territory.

To this end, it connects the islands of the Tuscan archipelago with the Italian mainland. In particular, it is the only line which passes all the islands with ferry ports, and smaller islands such as Capraia and Gorgona is the only connection. On Elba, the largest island of the Tuscan Archipelago, the Toremar operates the ports Portoferraio, Rio Marina, Cavo and until 2007, Porto Azzurro. Do not be approached the island Giannutri and the uninhabited Montecristo.

History

The company was founded in 1975 as the successor to a predecessor company ( Navigazione Toscana Spa) and was originally an entity belonging to state-owned Tirrenia group line as the other regional ferry companies of Italy ( Siremar, Caremar, Saremar, Adriatica and the parent company Tirrenia ). The Tirrenia group in turn belonged to 2009 Fintecna, an Italian state-owned company.

From 1999 to 2007, the Toremar operated with the monohull fast ferry Isola di Capraia (see below), the route Piombino - Rio Marina (Elba ) in 30 minutes. Since the normal crossing takes only 1 hour and the fast ferry cost significantly more, but the offer was granted no permanent success. Similar experiments with high-speed ferries to the other regional lines and the parent company Tirrenia reportedly contributed significantly to the poor financial position of the Group at that eventually the privatization under the government of Berlusconi IV with triggered.

In 2009, the Toremar was transferred to the Tuscany region. In May 2011, the previous direct competitor Moby Lines won a tender in the region to privatize and took over in October 2011, the Toremar with the obligation to rejuvenate the fleet and to perceive the public transport operations in the future, for which the region at a price of € 160 million for 12 years paid. In 2012, the acquisition or construction of several new ships were announced, was bought first the Rosa D' Abundo.
